The State Mint of Karlsruhe opened on 9 February 1827. Its purpose was to supply Baden, which had been elevated to a Grand Duchy in 1806 and its territory significantly enlarged, with a sufficient quantity of coins. This was intended to replace the numerous foreign coins in circulation at the time with domestic coins, further strengthening the autonomy of the still-young southwestern German state. All coin production for Baden took place exclusively in Karlsruhe.

The mint mark of the Karlsruhe Mint has been a “G” since 1872.

From 1873, the Karlsruhe Mint produced Pfennig pieces (from 1911, Mark pieces) for the German Empire. Commemorative coins were added to its production in 1925. Minting in the city was only suspended in February 1945 during World War II, and thanks to the largely intact building, it resumed in 1946 with 1 and 10 Pfennigs pieces. In 1955, to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the birth of Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm of Baden, nicknamed “Turkish Louis”, the minting of commemorative coins with a face value of 5 Marks was resumed. In the following decades, in addition to regular coin production for Germany, several international orders were accepted.

After the mint building required modernisation in the 1960s, a major renovation of the complex took place between 1976 and 1988 due to increased production requirements. While the Weinbrenner architecture was largely preserved, the original spatial layout had to be modified to accommodate new production processes. Nevertheless, coin production continued uninterrupted throughout this period.

In 1998, the state mints in Karlsruhe and Stuttgart merged to form the State Mints of Baden-Württemberg. Despite the merger, the mints retained their distinct mint marks, each bearing the letters “G” (for the Karlsruhe State Mint) and “F” (for the Stuttgart State Mint).
