I noticed recently that the commemorative coins for the Semiquincentennial program are being added to the Numista catalog in preparation of their release. There is a potential issue however with the Penny and Nickels being release however, as they are listed on the generic Penny and Nickel pages (see below) rather then having their own dedicated listing on Numista

N#50

It seems to me the the Semiquincentennial double date Penny and Nickel should have their own respective pages in the catalog for the following reasons:

1. While the penny design is the same (minus the double date), I would argue the Nickel is a slightly different design. On the regular Nickel issue, the word “Liberty” on the obverse is above the date, but on the Semiquincentennial Nickel the word “Liberty” is below the double date.

5 Cents 1776 ~ 2026 Nickel

2. There is a series for the program that has been created in the catalog. Not having unique listings for the Penny and Nickel would mean they would not be able to be added to the series despite them being a part of it.

3. Having the Semiquincentennial double date Penny and Nickel as part of the generic Penny and Nickel pages would result in their Type being incorrect, as both would be indicated as Standard Circulating, which is inaccurate. The Nickel should be marked as Circulating Commemorative, and the Penny, which is no longer circulating, should be listed as Non-circulating, or perhaps Collector coin per the US Mint website verbiage.

Thought it would be good to have this conversation now before the coins are released so that way any modifications are easier.

I agree 100%.  I think there was a lot of confusion at the beginning regarding where the 2026 penny and 2026 nickel would fit into the SemiQ Program.  The U.S. Mint’s own documentation at launch time was incomplete.

However, the 2026 penny and 2026 nickel are part of the SemiQ program and deserve their own page(s) since they are commemorative issues.  There’s an article by PCGS which explains the U.S. Treasury Secretary’s role in making the final decisions and what those decisions are:

I just submitted change requests deleting the 2026 year lines.

2026 year lines on both have been removed.

I have submitted requests to add the new Nickel and Penny to the catalog, so hopefully we see these added soon

Requests for the new coins have been approved. All coins have been added to the series. Good luck to everyone on the hunt for these coins as they are released

Maybe just Semiquicentenial Coin Program? Eight of the 15 aren't circulating coins.

Yeah I noticed that, and agree the circulating part should be removed. I can make a request for that
