George Cyril Brooke (1884–1934) was a distinguished British numismatist renowned for his expertise in English coinage. Beginning his tenure at the British Museum's Department of Coins and Medals in 1908, he remained a dedicated member until his passing in 1934. Throughout his career, Brooke contributed significantly to numismatic literature, authoring pivotal works such as "The Edwinstowe Find of Roman Coins" (1912) and the comprehensive two-volume "A Catalogue of English Coins in the British Museum: The Norman Kings" (1916). His scholarly efforts were recognized posthumously with the Medal of the Royal Numismatic Society in 1934.
In honor of Brooke's legacy, contemporaries and admirers collectively acquired a gold noble of Edward IV—the last coin he examined before his death—and donated it to the British Museum as a memorial. This gesture underscored the high esteem in which he was held within the numismatic community.
