Ulla Westermark

Ulla Westermark (1927–2020) was a distinguished Swedish numismatist renowned for her expertise in ancient Greek coinage. Born on March 30, 1927, in Trollhättan, Sweden, she pursued studies in literature, art history, and archaeology at Stockholm University, graduating in 1954. Her interest in numismatics was sparked by her mentor, German numismatist Willy Schwabacher. In 1961, she completed her doctoral thesis, "Das Bildnis des Philetairos von Pergamon. Corpus der Münzprägung," which examined the coinage of Philetairos of Pergamon. Westermark dedicated much of her career to the Royal Coin Cabinet in Stockholm, serving as its director from 1979 to 1983. During her tenure, she co-authored significant works, including "The Coinage of Kamarina" with G. Kenneth Jenkins in 1980. She also played a pivotal role in the "Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum" project, coordinating efforts to catalog Greek coinage. Her contributions to numismatics were recognized with several awards, such as the Gunnar Holst Medal in 1997 and the Huntington Medal Award in 1997.
