So maybe $1.50 to $2 on eBay?
I know prices are inflated on eBay but the same as mine is on several times for much dearer ..am I missing some
Hello iknw07554, it truly depends because you are lacking a few details. From your pictures I see that it was minted in Philadelphia (No mint mark) and not a proof, but it does not tell us whether it is a V. D. B. penny or not (not all cents have them). V. D. B. are the initials of Victor D. Brenner the designer of the Lincoln Cent. His initials would be on the bottom of Lincolns shoulder next to the rim of the penny, they are very tiny initials so you will need a loop. Here are the current 2020 values of 1909 values according to the US Official Red Book.

1909 VDB (no mint mark for Philadelphia)  : Fine = $17.00
1909 VDB (Proof)  : $8,500.00
1909 VDB ( S mint mark for San Francisco)  : Fine = $675.00
1909 ("No" VDB )  : Fine = $6.00
1909 ("No" VDB Proof)  : $550.00
1909 ("No" VDB S mint mark for San Francisco)  : Fine = $100.00

Yes the values are all over the place, good luck!
Hope this helps,
r,

No, you are not missing anything except the RIGHT information. Blue book states approximate wholesale values while Red book shows approximate retail values. Many folks use Red book as a reference when listing coins on Ebay and will even add value to that . Anybody can put a price on something and hope they find a buyer. Red book shows your coin at $5 - $6 in VG -F condition.
Maybe then I am missing something -
the 'signature' is not a signature but is initials - BUT for
only 1909 (which is, after all, the title of this topic) they are not
'on the bottom of Lincolns shoulder' - as that is for all other years.
It is, for 1909 coins, on the reverse - like on this >

Yes? No? Just asking!

The initials (signature) VDB on the 1909 was the engraver and controversial because it was so prominent on the coin on the reverse. Congress demanded it be more subtle and was moved in the latter years to the bottom of the shoulder on the obverse for that reason. Why it is listed as "signature" and "no signature" redundantly for the years after should be corrected for simplicity sake by the Numista gods. Perhaps VDB reverse for that year only.
Quick correction, you are both correct sorry I got turned around a little, but all the values are correct. The VDB is on the reverse of the 1909 under wheat stalks and starting in 1918 were placed on Lincolns shoulder.

And as far as values Retail : Red Book Wholesale: GreySheet

:) Interesting. Thanks.
Well, I have now made such a correction request, as it appears a
few times on the page. Will see if it gets approval.

The change has already been approved and that's an improvement. Now for the lines where one needs to distinction, it should just be "with VDB" / "without VDB" ─ no need to say "signature"...

Yes, much better now in it's simplicity and clarity.
All fascinating stuff ...I still hope I can make a few quid selling it.
