can somebody help me identifying the coin on the picture? Instead of Bronze, the material seems to be Copper-nickel. But according to all databases, this coin doesn't exist in Copper-nickel. Could this be a failure in the process?
The reverses of the 5 and 2 new pence are completely different. Check the diameter and weight. If they're consistent with the 2 new pence then luca biondi is correct. It's been plated.
There have been reports of 2p coins struck in silver-coloured metal, and people claim that the coins have been authenticated as "errors" by the Royal Mint. Someone is selling one on ebay (for £1250).
Edited to add: I just came across a copper-nickel 1971 2p on a coin dealer's website (for a more reasonable £125, one-tenth of the ebay price!).

Edit: The one on ebay is a 1996 coin so that can be discounted as substantiation for this coin from 1971. The second link would be much more interesting if it contained pictures of the coin and some explanation how it was authenticated as being made from the wrong planchet. Perhaps it is plated, too?

Many thanks, Jan
Looks like someone has chrome plated this - especially as part of a school chemical experiment.

I know this an older post, but I wanted to add that I have just found the same nickel coloured 2 New Pence coin in a collection that was given to me by a relative (in the UK) I was wondering if it could be a plated one too? I weighed the coin and it is 7.44g A standard coin I have weighed 7.09g I cannot find any reference to it though either.
