Hello! Dear numismatic colleagues, please evaluate the collectable interest & posible market price of my piece of denarius serratus of the magistrate HOSIDIUS GETA of the Roman ancient republic. Unfortunately,my coin was damaged in time by someone who holed it and then someone else tried to repair the hole…

The coin's weight is of 3.96g.,made of good silver. The dimensions are 19mm. × 21mm.

Thank you very much for your opinions & time!  .

Looks like a fake to me. The proportions look wrong, the lettering looks wrong, and it doesn't look like anything I can find. Take a look for yourself:

Sorry, dear Steve27,but you searched the wrong way: You provided numismatic documentation of the roman EMPEROR Geta and I clearly wrote that my coin(denarius serratus) is of the MAGISTRAT Hosidius Geta of the Roman Republic, centuries before the Roman Empire…

Some history is not harmful!

Regards!

I would like to direct your attention to the cuts around the coin's circumference. They indeed look like cuts. Very smooth and very regular. Those defects are meant to be tears, failures from metal expansion when it's struck. This coin is a good example of how uneven they are in a real coin.

I feel bad for Andi. Everyone thinks all his roman coins are fake. It must be very demoralizing for a collector :(

Agreed.  However, I would certainly rather know, than not know.  Perhaps Andi can wait for a good deal to send for authentication?  Fake or not, I enjoy the posts as they are lovely things to look at.

Dear collegues, the very strange thing for me is that my few antique coins(I collect more ''modern'' silver coins,fakes/copies are easier to discover!) WERE SEEN YEARS AGO BY SPECIALISED NUMISMATES OF THE ARCHEOLOGIC INSTITUTE OF THE ROMANIEN ACADEMY(their job been in this field). I showed them these coins and a few others(silver & bronze)ancient coins ; THEY WERE WHO IDENTIFIED THE COINS FOR ME AND NONE OF THEM EXPRESSED ANY DOUBTS,FOR NO COIN,IN THE DIRECTION OF THEIR AUTHENTICITY….

This fact is stressing me the most! So incompetent are these officials in their JOB?!? I must wonder that!

Have a nice day and be sure not to stress

When your coins are specific and unmatched -are unique,,AndiPasculescu10,, and that irritates us and provokes controversy.

You are the only one here that evokes these memories in me ( You probably remember that too lots of)

More than a hundred years ago - He was a leading expert in numismatics and an honorary member of the Association of Numismatic Society (professor and curator of the museum's collections), a recognized expert.

,,And it was posthumously discovered that he had coin stamps at home, which he discovered and presented as new discoveries (Royal Czech) and also sold them out cheerfully.,,

But the controversies caused are not aimed at you. But really don't hesitate to put unique coins in a case for PCGS - you can multiply those coins by their price.

We are cautious-and that is the reason.  So, stress-free and cheerful colleague, we are all here on the same boat.

Ivan

Regards.

I'll just add for an idea: Here's the discourse, but just colleagues look at the pictures of how it's done

Always someone to take advantage of others particularly when collecting is involved.  Prey upon desire and envy!

I am curious Andi, how many coins do you own that would benefit from being slabbed by PCGS?  I wonder for my own curiosity at the cost of slabbing coins.

Hi again,Slipstreamed!

My friend,I don't know now exactly but a few, perhaps around only 20(all of them bought on eBay). I don't live in the U.S.,l never traveled there and the postal procedure is difficult and costly in advance…

Yes, certainly the cost is prohibitively expensive!  Is there a grading service in your home country?

No,no! No grading service. Not even coin shops in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, where I live ( except one single shop with very low prices paid for good coins and high prices for less interesting pieces to be sold by them!; mostly,a tought dealer!).

There is an old Romanian Numismatic Society with some activity & periodic ''flee'' open markets with all kind of antiquities from private sellers (coins, medals, decorations & stamps among them)

It comes with experience, unfortunately.  And if you don't have the experience, then you need to purchase it from reputable dealers!  Even in those cases, you might get a forgery, but the chances are greatly reduced.  Your coin, alas, is fake…
