Hi, I have this wonderful coin in my possession and I wondered if anyone could give me your expert opinion on grading and value. I believe it is a silver 1 Patagon, Dutch coin of Philip IV of Spain. Thank you in advance

My humble opinion is fine to possibly very fine leaning towards Fine 15 and possibly Vf 20. $80 - $120 U.S. depending on how badly somebody wants it. Here is an example of a sold slabbed and graded “Very Fine” at auction. Note that it is labeled “cleaned”. Also remember a buyers premium should be added to this when evaluating value and the fact that a premium was paid for the slab and professional grading services while yours is not. Click on the link and then click on the coin again to see the actual sold price. Good luck with it.
Thank you for the advice. It’s appreciated
Please tell us the size of the coin so that we know if it is 1 patagon (41 mm) or ½ patagon.
It is Spanish Netherlands / Duchy of Brabant (so, “Belgian” rather than “Dutch” as the Dutch Republic was not making this type). Evenly struck which is unusual for this type, original patina (many have been cleaned), very nice coin.
I agree with HarryG on the grade. Would be TB (French) or F-VF. Yes, about $125 if it is a patagon; maybe more for the eye appeal. I paid about $120 for mine, same date, a bit more wear.
Hi TDZiemia
I believe it is as stated in my original message, 1 Patagon and not ½.
It does measures 41 millimetres as you mentioned.
it’s interesting that you say it is unusual. As I am in the Uk I am having to translate the US values into £’s.
I have in fact been offered £130 for it by a detectorist I know. From what I have read here, it seems as though I would be getting a fair price if I were to accept it. Thank you for your input. I appreciate it
If the coin were sold at auction, for, say 110, then the commission would bring it to 130-135. I think it's a fair offer. IN a very competitive auction it might go higher, but as HarryG points out, you never know.
These huge hunks of silver were still being hammered. Many of them have areas of weakness either in the center, or out at the legends. Yours has nice detail in the center both sides, only some small weak areas on the legends. One can find better "technical" grade coins that are not as attractive as yours.
Good luck!
Thank you for your interesting insight and help with the valuation etc.
Really appreciate it
