There are just so many varieties that makes it so difficult to identify the coin exactly.

Are there tricks to identifying them spot on?

Only practice:)

Usually I do the following:

1. Define ruler that has written on the text side

2. Define mint by the letters under the horse (sometimes) or by the style

3. Narrow an area of the search if possible by some known style features: e.g., for the coins of Peter I of Kadashevskiy mint there were 2 periods with 3-lines and 6-7-lines text, for the Ivan IV  there were also 2 periods with the word Tzar or without it

4. Define the horse side by detailes of the die

5. Define the text side by the style of the letters and arrangement of them relative to each other

But the easiest way is to swap the wire coins that have been already identified from me:))

That's an elegant process :) It is incredible how one can narrow down to the exact coin by doing this. If at all I get another Kopeck, I'll be referring to these steps in the future.

Thank you! :)
