A die crack does not leave the same mark on both sides.  This is PMD (post mint damage).

Thanks 😼

Wait!

Our listing for this coin says that it has coin alignment.500 Réis - Brazil – Numista

If this is correct, then this defect is NOT in the same place on both sides.  Of course we have the possibility that there is an error in the listing, and that this coin should be medal alignment (the poster can easily check).

Even if that is the case, it would be strange for PMD to occur along the same line both sides.

So, is there an alternative possibility of a cracked planchet (rather than a cracked die)?

I agree, I do not think that is post mint. defective planchet seems most likely.

Defective planchette makes sense but if it indeed coin alignment then it’s not the same defect on either side?  Maybe some pictures of the edge would help.

It is misaligned! Here it is directly flipped over from the center of the reverse(?) (the one with 500 is reverse, right?) and what’s more is I located the cracks and they are actually on two different sides of the coin! The picture below these first two shows me pinching the coin, and where my left (your left?) thumb on the reverse is one crack, and my right (I guess your right, or opposite of where the crack is on the reverse) pointer finger on the obverse, while you can’t see it, is where the other crack is.

Wdym by edge? The rim? (Sorry I’m really new at this stuff, this is my sister’s collection that I’m logging because she doesn’t care to)

That third picture above is the edge, with the reeding.

here is the full rim, specifically where the cracks touch— I see nothing special about it. Anyway, here’s a higher quality picture of the crack on the reverse

Defective planchet seems to be a reasonable explanation.  I don't follow error coin values so I have no idea about value.
