Blank Obverse! Not blank planchet!

I found this while searching through some bank rolls. The obverse simply is gone, not even faintly there. I can’t feel or see and signs of sanding either. What is this and approximately how much is it worth?

It could be many things.  Firstly, what does it weigh? That could tell us all we need to know.

the weight is 2.6 grams

Sorry, Welcome to Numista. I just realized you are new. A normal Lincoln Memorial cent should weigh 3.11 grams. Definitely not a mint error so that leaves post mint damage. Simply a curiosity done by somebody with too much time on their hands.

I actually think that the problem might be my digital scale, I just put a completely normal penny on there and it said 2.6 too. So my scale is reading wrong but it’s also reading them as the same.

Normal penny is vague and that could mean anything. Different types/ different weights. Put another Lincoln Memorial on the scale for comparison.

Still is reading 2.6 for another Lincoln memorial.

You will have to address your scale because if we cant get accurate weights we are just speculating from the start and spinning our wheels.

Sounds good, I will try and find another scale and reply with the true weight to this thread. I appreciate all the help so far :)

2.6 g is about right for copper plated zinc cents.  If you want to check it for a copper cent find one 1981 or before.

Yes the scale actually does work. It appears that the cent I have weighs the typical amount for a copper plated zinc cent. When I put a 1978 P on the scale it read 3.1.

In the second picture the rim is still there, so the coin has gone through that process.

Blank > Planchet = adding the rim

So it is post-mint damage - someone, for some reason, has smoothed it all away.

Maybe to start engraving but never finished. Or a school or engineering experiment.
