British East Indies 1 keping confusion

5 сообщений • просмотрено 635 раз

So I've been discussing some page modifications with a numista referee, but we're both confused about what exactly differentiates a few specific coins. Could somebody clarify what the difference is between 1 keping tokens KM#8.1, KM#8.2 and KM#Tn3?

I've mainly been using these sources https://www.coinarchives.com/w/results.php?search=keping & https://en.ucoin.net/catalog/?country=british_east_indies & Katz Auction results to gather information, but some of it seems to either be contradictory or just downright confusing. Ucoin seems to go into the most depth, but doesn't differentiate between KM#8.1 and KM#8.2, which Numista and auctions do. KM#8.1 should (theoretically) be the only variation that uses a fraction on top for its value (I believe the current image used for KM#8.2 on Numista may be a KM#8.1 image), and it has a different inscription on the non-chicken side. I've got no clue however, what the difference between KM#8.2 and KM#Tn3 is supposed to be, other than that KM#8.2 is supposed to have more different errors and variations.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Here are the Numista pages:

KM#8.1 N#86572

KM#8.2 N#34007

KM#Tn3 N#40074

And here are Katz Auction images:

KM#8.1

2423 - British East Indies Singapore 1 Keping 1831 AH 1247 NGC AU

KM#8.2

2916 - British East Indies Malacca 1 Keping 1832 AH 1247 Error

KM#Tn3

2306 - British East Indies 1 Keping 1803 AH 1411

Who coined the term "coining a term" anyway?

I don't know how helpful this is but, I purchased a Singapore merchant token some years ago and used this blog to identify it (by weight).

I see there are some other references at the bottom of the blog which may also be helpful.

Best of luck.

Isn't Tn3 Nickel?

(or is Krause wrong again)

According to Krause it's easy to tell from the top of the reverse:

  • 8.1: “1/9”
  • 8.2: “1/”
  • TN3: “9”

Which makes the picture for the Numista 8.2 a variation of 8.1.

(I'm not sure about the SS# numbers, most because the images in my scan of the book are hard to read.)

The images in Saran Singh are too low res to be useful, but the descriptions could be helpful.

(Assuming the KM/SS have been correctly cross referenced, not sure they have)

KM# 8.1 (SS 29 - Type J/V) Cocks with a bushy tail end with four feathers / 1411.

KM# 8.2 (SS 27 - Type F/III) Cocks with the last two tail feathers crossed / 1247.

KM# Tn3 (SS 28 - Type F/V) Cocks with the last two tail feathers crossed / 1411.

So many types, some rabbit holes are just not worth it…

(Mostly copper with some brass, SS 36 also in Nickel.)
