I only posses 1 War medal and its a Japanese one, for the participation on the war against China. I really like it as it has an original box and a (sorry don´t know how its called in English) Honor deed? with the name of the recipient.

This is a fantastic piece. Too bad my family doesn't have any military medals like that.

My dad has his grandas he lied about his age to get into the army and served in both world wars, the only pictures of him his arm is always behind his back as it was disfigured by a grenade. I don't know where my grandas are (dads dad) he started on the submarines in WWII and did it all to frontline action to bomb disposal in Italy where he raised the Union Jack and lowered the swastika which he kept (now moth-bitten a great shame) he was on watch one night and after a while a big blade comes round his neck and says you got a light ?
It was a Gurkha and his "platoon" all had got past him, when they draw their knives they have to draw blood so he knicked his own thumb and out it back

Most veterans never tell stories about the real action that they saw. They usually just share the lighter stuff.
My Grandfather passed away in 1989 partially due to grenade wounds and we newer knew where he hid his medals unfortunately he only remembered that he dug em next to a tree but he couldn´t remember where.
He also went through a lot in the war but he was rather lucky he was shot 7 times (arms, foot, legs, shoulder) and wounded by several grenade shrapnels. he managed to escape twice russian imprisonment. He was a commanding officer of a panzer unit, unfortunately he passed away when I was still very young so I don´t now so much about his wartime stories, and he never wrote any of those stories down.

I served in Bosnia and Afghanistan. I went in the army when I was 18 years old and lost my 2 legs in Afghanistan 4 years ago. I spent nearly 25 years in the military. I never tell war stories. I can only talk to other veterans who were there. I am sure your grandfather was a good soldier. Many say soldiers are brave, but I do not think so. Soldiers do what they have to do under the circumstances. When at war soldiers do what they need to do to survive and help their fellow soldiers survive. We were trained to act and most soldiers are good at their job. The worst part is when you come home and face the nightmares.
