Hello,

I have what I think is a Byzantine coin, can anyone help me identify it.

Weight: 16.0 grams

Diameter: 26.5-28mm

Thickness: 3.3m

Any help is appreciated, if the pictures are not good enough I can try to take better pics.

Thanks in advance,

Hello,

considering the weight and size it would be a 40 nummi coin, in my opinion.
I am by no means an expert on Ancients, so I could easily be wrong.

Hello again,

Thank you, I think you are right :)

Anymore info would be appreciated!

Hello again, I still need help IDing this coin if anyone has any idea please do share.

From what I have seen I can see a few letters but I can't pinpoint it as the weight is too big for most byzantine coins but there are definetely some greek letters so I don't know where else to look. The reason I think it is greek is the epsilon which I have not seen a curved E in Roman or other latin alphabet using anicent entities before.

Maybe this image of a 40 Nummi (Justinian, officina A) could help?

And if it's not a 40 nummi, then my best guess is a Sesterius. (just a guess 😅)

If you rotate the first image at 90 degrees counterclockwise the legend may start to be written something like “King of the kings” and the other side may show Christ.

Hello, I understand you mean the Class A2 anonymous follis, I did consider that possibility but I could not fit the lettering to that, you say it might look like it if turned 90 degrees but I am not sure I see it, can you please share where exactly on the coin you mean you see it?

Thank you 😊,

Could be something like this.

From what I can see, it could possible be a Ptolemy III coin, one of the smaller denominations.

I did consider the Ptolemaic coins but couldn't find any non-precious coins that looked similar, I do think that most likely it is either a 40 Nummi or an A2 Jesus Christ, King of the Kings type because of the unusual weight, greek script and the fact that the letters that can be seen are very profound and thick but I can't pinpoint for certain. I had asked a Greek friend if he can see any letters and this is what he came up with

In another forum someone had suggested the other side could be a bust, which might lead to it being a coin from before the reform of 538
