Hi,

I bought two unidentified coin last weekend. First one was not hard to find, but the second one is so tough that I don't know even where to start.

It was purchased as an unknown coin, with the only thing written in the holder being “Asia. India (?)”.

Diameter: 14 to 16 mm (round irregular)

Obverse: Three lines and a half moon above the lines.

Reverse: Undistinguishable figure, perhaps surrounded by a square.

With such a difficult coin to ID, any direction is welcome.

Thanks.

Update 09/02/23: Added more photos, from another camera and more sunlight.

Since the coin is very dark and with few details visible, photographing it under direct sunlight turned out to be a bad idea.

Orientation A (crescent above lines):

Orientation B (crescent below lines):

In both cases I assumed a coin alignment for the positioning of the reverse.

If it helps anyone, pictures cropped and brightened …

Bumping the thread before it falls on page 2.

Bumping again, it became the last topic of the page…

Did some searches here and there, nothing so far.

Any idea someone?

Might be an Abbasid AE Coin with crescent on the bottom?

Just my guess.

Thanks.

I did a search on Abbasid fals on Zeno, but none of the results matched. Most of them have a star rather than a crescent moon.

Found one with a similar shape (https://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=115499), but it may mean nothing, the text doesn't match.

During the search heard about small cast Abbasid fals from Syria and Iraq.

But no matches.

The erased reverse complicates things even more, can't figure anything but an supposed external square.

And in the Abbasid coins the text is usually inside a circle.

Might be nothing but “já que tamo olhando…”:

Nothing yet but thanks anyway.

When you talked about the abassids I also looked at the umayyads.

But in all the umayyads with crescent I saw, the crescent is a big one in the middle, we're looking for a small crescent near the edge under or above three lines.

On the last days looked on some indian coins but still nothing (since it was written “India?” in the holder).

Updated the initial post with more photos from today.

I guess Abbasid will be the best shot, there are thousands of types, example:

What is this one please???

Alright, I think I got something.

Decided to look at the entire list of Abbasid coppers on Zeno, without any search filter.

And found some coins with a reasonable compatibility with the visible side of my coin:

All of them with the same ID: Abbasid fals, Damascus mint, date AH 182.

With the other side erased it will be near impossible to confirm.

And my coin is a little smaller than these ones.

Congrats,

No doubt is Abbasid

The other side is just the other part of the Kalima

Thanks for your help, Geison.

One last thing before marking as solved: Should I put it here (N#73110 ), here (N#157306 ) or create a new page?

I decided to add it under N#73110  with comments.

Now I can close the thread.

Thanks to all.
