Uncial script

Hello,

I would like to give more details about the way Numista now supports uncial script, as part of the larger change to enhance the display of lettering in the catalogue.

European coins of the 13th to 16th century have a characteristic way to write letters. This style is called “Latin (uncial)” on Numista (although I'm not fully sure this is the correct name; if any expert can tell us more about this style, it would be greatly appreciated!)

For coin sides which script is set as “Latin (uncial)”, Numista displays the lettering with a specific font, which is a subset of the font Numismatica Medievalis developed by the Royal Numismatic Society of Belgium. For each letter, two shapes are available, and you can choose between both by typing the letter in upper case or lower case, according to the table below. This is especially useful for letters such as N, which may have a shape similar to a “H” or a roundish “n” in the legends.

We are working to set the script “Latin (uncial)” where appropriate and updating the letterings to get the correct shape of the letters. Any help with this huge task is highly welcome!

See for example N#106548

with two different shapes for the initial N and the final N in the word “NOMEN” of the reverse legend.

The script looks most similar to Gothic majuscule / Unical Gothic captials. (German Wiki Link)
