Bought a 25 Ptas 1957 coin today. Wanted to put it on the record in "my coins" but was confused as by the year ...on the coin is 1957, but at the details on the website there's a whole list of other dates (1957 58; 1957 59; etc.) Could not find a second date on the coin ... help anybody ?
1957 is the design date on the front of the coin.
On the back is a little star that has the year in.
I have one of those as well, as here mine has 70 in star (i.e. minted in 1970).
Welcome to the forum.
It's the same with all Spanish denominations produced in the period. All have a generic date of 1957 but the actual date is engraved in the two stars on the reverse. If you look at the left star you will see "19" and on the right star two other number, e.g. 66 = 1966.
You may need a loupe to see them and on worn coins they can be very faint.
I have forgiven the bombing of Guernica but this poor coin design will forever stain Franco's image.
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.
