1853 1/2 gold token found in inherited collection

I recently inherited a collection from my grandfather that I have been gradually working on going through and adding to this site. I cannot however find any info on this particular coin either on Numista or online in general. I've also checked the exonumia search for the California Gold series. The closest I can find are ¼ coins that look like this, or octagonal ½ coins. I understand 1853 is a common year to counterfeit/replicate california gold coins, is this a potential fake?
