Rare mule coin, Aachen 1 mark 1645 - known variant, or new find?

WAG online auctions (https://www1.wago-auktionen.de/katalog.aspx) is now selling a ‘Zwitter’ = mule coin from Aachen (Old German States / Altdeutschland) with Reverse 1645, while date on Obverse is unclear; 164? Also - the picture on the obverse is different from two earlier sold Zwitter coins from Aachen with Reverse 1645 (also by WAG online), and obverse clearly shown 1648. However, the coin on sale now, see picture below, seems more like a 1643? Also the hat that Carl the Great is wearing seems different. Overall the obverse seems different (for comparison with the earlier sols 1645/1648, check https://www.aachen-muenzen.com/neue-entdeckungen/

My question is: is this really the same as the previously two sold, as indicated by WAG? Or is this a new find?

What would be the value? (starting price is 200 euro)

Hello 🤖

Without pictures, it will be very difficult for anyone to help you. Could you please post clear pictures of each side of your item?

Please note that this is an automatic message. Feel free to ignore if it is not relevant.

It will be your decision, but the condition is vf-, vf at best and you will have to pay buyers premium and shipment also. I wouldn't bid.

I don't understand you reasoning. It's not like there is choice on the market for better grade, is there?

yes and no.

My estimation is only a very general one. Most small coins, produced with handmade dies in this period, will belong to some rare variant, reported or not. Probably there are thousands of them and each variant isn't counting much.

If you are specialised on Aachen coins or coins of 30-years war .. then it's easier to accept that price.

best regards

Stefan

Agreeing with the principle, I do not see an abundance of unambiguous (2 different years) Zwitter coins from that location and period. This is what I know from https://www.aachen-muenzen.com/st%C3%A4dtische-pr%C3%A4gungen/ferdinand-iii-1637-1657/ . :

- 3x gold dukat 1645/1643

- 2x silver mark 1645/1648

This one would potentially be:

- 1x silver mark 1645/1643

Which brings the total to 6 coins known worldwide. Or am I overseeing something?

The ‘invisible’ number could also be 'überprägt' or removed on purpose

You enter the auction, and bid, and decide how much you are willing to pay.

Sometimes you get lucky, and even though the coin is rare, nobody else cares, and you win it.  This happened to me about a year ago, and I wrote to the principal at the auction house, and he said, yes, he was also surprised, and good for me.

Other times, you learn that there are a few other collectors interested, and the price goes up strongly.   And you need to decide how far up to follow it.

As mentioned elsewhere, it is certainly not a commn coin.  It's not easy to find another auction result.  There is no way to know what will happen.  It's WAG, not Heritage, not Kunker.  Maybe nobody will be watching, and you can get it.

Good luck!
