Hi

I'm hoping to find out a little more about this coin, I recieved it as a gift from the Emir of Kuwait in 1992 when a Royal Navy ship I was serving on visted Kuwait shortly after the Gulf War ended, each person on the ship was presented with a different coin depending on your rank. The coin was presented with the  chain loop already attached.

The coin differs from others I've seen in that it has some sort of stamp or hallmark on one side, this matches other coins given to other crew members on the ship, but I've not seen this stamp on any other similar coins. If you know what this hallmark is it would be interesting to know a bit more about it.

My assumption is the soldered loop hurts the value

It's not 1255 RY 7. It's 1327. What is the diameter/weight? I think with the hallmarks and the loop and the story it increases the value. Can you get a closeup of them?

Hi Thanks for the reply, the coin is about 18mm and I don't have  scales to weigh it .

1327 Regnal year 4 -1912.  As it is is rather worn start the value at melt value. But then how do you then place a value on that great story? Priceless as far as I am concerned. 18mm is correct although this detail is not documented on the Numista link. I can't explain these hallmarks however.  Thank you for your service.

Thanks, does the hallmark tell you the RY?

No, but just below the hallmark is what looks like an E, that is the regnal year. I like the fact that whatever that hallmark or counterstamp is, they took care not to obscure the regnal year.

RY 4 - 1912?

RY 4 - 1912?

You may be correct. Let me double check. Once again I used the Numista “auction photo” next to 1910 as a quick reference. I should have known better to have depended on that detail once again. If you recall a previous discussion we had about that poor methodology.

Yes indeed, you are correct. E = RY 4. 1912

Hi , Thank you for the information it's been really interesting to find out a little more about this coin, and it's worth a lot more to me than the scrap value, also to add to what I've already posted. The ship I served on was HMS Hermoine, a Leander class frigate which deployed from the UK in 1991 and returned home in 1992. And a photo of me next to some captured Iraqi tanks. Take Care.

I did some edits on my previous posts while you posted this. You are welcome. You guys were wonderful during that nasty war back then.

I saw that auction posted against the wrong year line. I don't know how that happens since the Katz auction was very clear it was RY 4.

Anyway, I made a change request to fix it.
