8 Reales 1876

First time posting on these forums and new to coin collecting. I'm posting because I think I bought a fake coin after doing a visual inspection. I received it this evening through the mail.  I purchased it online and trusted the seller enough to buy the coin with only pictures rather than getting a middle man. I'm mostly looking for confirmation on potentially a bad decision. I marked areas in red that looked like pitting and included a second set with flash.

I addition, the coin feels smooth with a oil like residue and smell that screams fake to me.

I also purchased a 1878 Morgan that I need to take a closer look at especially when I think the 8 Reales is a fake.

Compare to a certified example although with some graffiti. Sorry for a little distortion because I could not size the photos exactly the same. On the face of it, it appears to be genuine. In addition to visuals, you should invest about $15 in a coin scale with an accuracy to at least 100th of a gram. Check diameter in MM as well. Do not be overly concerned with the defects you circled as these could be explained by some type of  environmental damage and/or due to simply damage through impacts in circulation over it's 150 year history. Some people will apply an oil like substance on a coin to in an attempt to preserve them. Perhaps that is what happened in this case. If it weighs right and the diameter is correct, it is most likely genuine. 27.07g  - 38.9mm - 1876 Pi MH (Pi is the Mint and MH is the Assayer initials)

Thanks for the quick response. I took some quick measurements this morning in a rush to beat the morning traffic. My kitchen scale is not very accurate but I got 26 grams and I took some diameter measurements with some vernere calipers and it was around 38.9 mm. I also used a strong magnet and it looks to be diamagnetic.

From the quick measurements I'm less worried, but the damage/pitting on the side is kind of odd.

Finally I should have taken a thickness measurement but forgot this morning. I will take one once I get home.

We cant possibly know exactly what causes some types of defects but even the edge details looks correct regardless of the defect. Someone could have made a poor attempt at a mount to wear it as a piece of jewelry for example. Don't over think it and a kitchen scale is not ideal but it confirms it is in the ballpark as far as weight is concerned. Thickness is not so much a concern at this point because the edge details are correct. Genuine as far as I am concerned.

Thanks for the sharing of knowledge and images. It was much appreciated, I can sleep better knowing that it has more legitimacy than my pessimistic view and assessment.
