Egypt 10 Milliemes FAO 1976 - brass or aluminium bronze?

8 сообщений • просмотрено 117 раз

My question is regarding this coin:

N#1823

The page says the coin is brass, and it certainly looks different to the other years in this FAO set. You can see the set by searching for Issuer Egypt and then “10 milliemes FAO”.

Anyway, I have this coin, and it looks to be Aluminium Bronze rather than the Brass that is specified in the page for the coin, because it is identical metallically to the other coins in the series.

Here's my coin:

So, my question is, are there two coins, one brass one Aluminium bronze? Or, is the page wrong (I don't think so because the picture looks to be brass). Not sure.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

From SCWC which also says Brass

Brass can look very different according to percentages used the cu and the zn used….

Thanks for your reply.

Yeah, that information may have been copied over from the SCWC though.

It's odd because my coin looks like all the other coins (metallically) in the series. I'm convinced it's Aluminium Bronze, but consensus seems to be it's brass. I just wondered if there were actually two coins - one brass and one Aluminium bronze.

Anyway, not a big deal, was just curious.

Thanks again.

The only proof would be a metallurgical test or official mint documentation.

Hello, Thanks for pointing that out, so I looked into the materials used for this coin, I couldn't find the wording of the actual decree stating the coin composition, however according to MHC , all Egyptian coins with face value 10 milliemes from 1975 to 1980 were made of Aluminum Bronze, which makes me believe its actually Aluminium- Bronze rather than Brass

a simple XRFtest will clarify this situation

Thanks for looking into this. I did not even know we had those reference guides on Numista, so thanks for pointing that out!

That was my suspicion, as the coin I have is pretty much identical to the other coins in the series which are Aluminium-Bronze.

Thanks again.

I'm fairly new to coins and have not obtained that equipment or the knowledge to use it as yet. I will look into it though - thanks for the suggestion.
