7.77 g. - 21.20 mm

This coin seems to hold a lot of silver. On the reverse, I see a person seated left on a shield?, left hand on a bow, maybe holding an arrow in the right had.

It is a serratus coin as you see.

The name of the king could not be read, but I can check candidate names.

What do you think of this?

Unfortunately the name can't be read if it's on the worn out left column. And the right column simply says “Basileos” (king).

ΑΛΕ[Χ]ΑΝΔΡ[..] on the left, I think.

ΑΛΕ[Χ]ΑΝΔΡ[..] on the left, I think.

I stand corrected, it is partially visible. Thanks.

That answers one thing, but it raises another.

It can't be Alexander the Great, his silvers of this type usually have the name written on the right column.

Did a search here with the filters: silver, 20 to 23 mm, 7 to 9 g, 400 BC to 200 AD. Nothing.

ALEXAND is very likely.

I thought that serratus greek coins were not so numerous… it seems it is not easy to identify !!!

It's not in an area I know much about, but it does seem to me on a second look that this shows Apollo, sitting on an omphalos with a bow resting on the ground, the Seleucid type that inspires the massive series of Parthian drachms.  There were a couple of Seleucid kings called Alexander, but again, really not my area so I can't give any certainty.

There were a couple of Seleucid kings called Alexander.

That's a big lead!

There are some coins under Alexander I Balas and Alexander II Zebinas that are close to this one.

But they're serrated bronzes or non serrated silvers.

You are quite knowledgeable for a person who is not expert on such coins. It helps a lot!!!

I am not sure of the metal of this coin. It seems to be billon with at least 400ppt of silver… but I could be wrong.

Je pense que c'est une monnaie marocaine… ALM avait parlé de sheddah il y a longtemps…

Savez-vous ce que c'est ? Malheureusement, c'est une ruine proche de mon tas de monnaies de rien du tout…

Please open a separate thread for this one. It is completely unrelated to your previous coin.

And with a separate thread there are more chances of someone with knowledge on islamis coins to view it and help you, than leaving it here on a thread about an ancient coin.

Back to the matter, thanks for the compliment.

I am not an expert but I know one place or two to do a search.

And I like this area of ancient coins because there's always something new to learn.

it is a mistake sorry… ignore that…

I checked Sears GCV and I could not find this coin under the coinage of one of the Alexander Seleucid kings, even though some were serratus.

Maybe?

That's one of the coins I was talking about on sunday's night post.

It is the closest one indeed.

Oceans, can you check again the composition of your coin? If it was 100% bronze all the time, then we got an answer.

But this specific type is not on our catalog yet.

It could be bronze. At that time, the bronze could contain some metal that gives that shiny look. It looks selverish, but it could be due to many reasons.

I believe you have found the right ID… Thanhks a lot.

And you make me discove this great web site… Thanks
