Hello all,

I have a coin that I was told that is a fractional dirham. Believed to be under the Chaghatayid Mongols from the 1280s to the 1290s.

Here are the specs:

  • Silver composition
  • 1.74g
  • 20mm in diameter
  • <1 in thickness

Can't wait to hear what this is!

hello,

bumping this up to get an answer. Thanks!

Hello —

It looks like the coin was harshly cleaned. I think, too, that it was heavily clipped, a common practice before the introduction of the collar. I say this because we can see traces of a legend along the rim on the first photo.

There's not enough remaining of the central legend for me to read it, but experts would probably recognize the type.

On the other side (which is probably the obverse), in the center, I think we have the usual formulation “There is no god but Allah; Muhammad is the messenger of Allah” — but even here I'm guessing based on past experience.

Hopefully, someone who recognizes the style will be able to say more: provenience, approximate date, etc.

Bumping this up to see if anyone could ID this.

Thanks!
