I was just curious and wondered what text is at the top of the axe. I can see that the bottom text reads “petain”, but I can only make out something like “parc” at the top. Anyone know?
The expression "Iustis spes pacis in armis" is a (perhaps less belligerent) paraphrase of the classic Roman expression: "si vis pacem, para bellum" ("if you want peace, prepare for war") written by the Roman writer and (military?) thinker Publius Flavius Vegetius in the 4th century AD.
A phrase that - unfortunately - has become very relevant again in recent times!
