I made an Ebay impulse purchase of a “restrike” of the 1870 5 Peseta at just above melt value, but can't seem to find a match in the Numista catalogue (or anywhere else) for it.

Here is a rough spec (measuring tape, kitchen analogue scale and a fridge magnet…)

- 45mm wide

- 3mm thick

- 25g (…ish) heavy

- Not magnetic

- Probably not plated (deep gouge on reverse at the top of the right hand column shows consistent metal)

Any ideas of from whence it came?

Given the obvious size difference, I don't think that it is trying to be a fake.

I don't think that it is the aliexpress copy. The pictures there show a coin of poor detail with obvious flat spots in the crest details. The specimen I have is very well made and attractive to look at and hold. The only obvious differences from the pictures of the real coin are:

  •  the dimensions,
  • The reedings around the perimeter flat are a bit rounder inward facing,
  • the dots in the bottom left quarter of the crest are closer set to the verticals

Also, my coin has

  • no obvious magnetism
  • the deep gouge shows consistent metal
  • an excellent noble metallic ring

I do believe that this coin is mostly silver, which would make no economic sense to sell it for 1.99 on AliExpress.

Also the coins pictured there are images of real coins with the COPY word digitally added. So it is not possible to use the site images to “compare” and spot fakes. Unfortunelly.

If you zoom in on the scans I posted of the coin, you will see some patination, which suggests that it was not recently made. This is a high quality coin, and from my limited expertise, very probably of a high grade of silver content. Also, the seller was very clear about “restrike”. All the other coins I purchased from them were as described. I doubt that there is any fraud involved here. Somewhere in history a mint has made a restrike and probably oversized it to prevent it being mistaken for the original.

There are “restrike” tokens onsale.

Have you tried searching for the mint mark?

Yes, that looks about right, thanks Frenchlover. 2020 is a good clue. My kitchen scale must be very off however, that one weighs in at 74.9g, which make sense since it is bigger than the original.

Does anybody have any idea of how to track any more information from the pcgs information on the pictures?

The PCGS info page doesn't say much about the origin.

As far as I can tell, the reproduction has no different mint marks from the original.

Not the original marks but the added one.

It was so big, so obvious that I completely missed it!

The Royal Mint of Madrid. Looking good that this is a good quality official reproduction…

I got a better scale and measuring calipers and requested a catalogue page to be added for this coin.

Thanks for the help.
