New members seem to find it easier to let older members do the work than trying to do it themselves? I think they should learn to use numista. Right you are I can't be bothered to find an answer to a question like this: what's the current average value?

I’m with @Sjoelund on this one, for two reasons; first the new member called Carlcoins has a really nice 50c silver Chile coin from 1856 and has watermarked it Ccoins - which leads me to believe he is in the coin business and or knows far more than his question and new membership implies. Secondly he has joined and immediately posted a „what’s the value“ question without even bothering to read the forum policy or find the coin page. Without doing any extra follow up myself I’m sure the OP could have answered the question himself and if he came back with the link (which was politely asked for) I suspect help would have been given. Instead @TCon , you enabled the OP by linking the coin but didn’t answer the question either instead fired one off at Sjoelund, who in my opinion does lots and lots for this website and has answered many a valuation question in his time.

Now of course I have fired one off against you TCon and am guilty of the same thing 😂 and the OP still hasn’t got his answer, maybe he will follow the link and find out himself. What a lovely coin by the way.

Sjoelund says right there in his message that he can't be bothered to answer a question posed in the title. So why bother replying to the thread? That's a rhetorical question to which I already know the answer.

And I might not know the value (which I could find by searching NGC or recent auction sales) but for some reason Sjoelund thought a link to the coin's Numista page might help so I posted that link. You call it enabling, I call it helping.

Anyway, I won't apologize for helping a new member, if only to provide a Numista link, which was requested by a prolific member who easily could have found and posted that link himself.

At least now the OP has that link. Hope that helps.

PS: your opinion of @Sjoelund  is vastly overstated.

You never had any intention of helping this member. You knew the OP's question before you ever clicked the topic. You said that new members "should learn to use Numista" (true!), but the Numista coin page doesn't even have the values listed for that year, so what's the point of asking for a link?

PS: I think that Numista should sequester new members, and have perhaps a 3-day waiting period before new members can post valuation questions. In that time they could read all the Numista documentation like how to crop photos, identify common coins, etc. But that's not how this website works so we'll always have new members posting awful pics and asking basic questions. C'est la vie.

I like to have the Numista page linked on the request so I can get the SCWC KM number and look up the coin for values easily.  I will do it myself if I have to but it would be nice if the poster included it.

You used that same comment about me a few weeks ago. An immature, ill-educated attempt at an insult from a typical schoolyard bully. You have no substantive critique so you create a strawman argument. Shame on you son.

PS: I find you and Sjoelund to be entirely antagonistic. Sjoelund jumps down the throat of every new member he sees on here if they dont post the exact right photos, links, weights, and diameter. No tact at all. He calls it teaching, I call it combative pettiness. And was that Offa a few weeks ago critiquing a member in another thread who asked for a coin's value in the valuation forum?? Talk about getting one's knickers in a twist.

We are all coin collectors here, it doesn’t matter where you are from. I have noticed often that you TCon often refer to other countries as inferior / different to your own country, having a dig at perceived ways of life that you do not like or disagree with. It may come as a surprise to you but the majority of the world doesn’t like the USA, its global policies or over reaching stance, yet many collectors here refuse to stoop to making digs at your country. We somehow, and I often dont understand why, rise above taking cheap shots at the USA. So I would appreciate it if you did the same towards other members from other countries.

Guys: please: calm down. No need to argue. I agree that Sjoelunds comment is helpful, however sometimes it can seem worded in an unfriendly way.

Yeah sure, I’ll waste my time looking though all your posts. Not.

I will just explain to you how your statement; „Careful @Offa , your comments might hurt someone's feelings, and I believe that's a criminal offense in merry ol' England. is a dig at England, as you seem to disagree with me calling you out and claim my statement as such is false.

Careful Offa“ = a warning to named member, „your comments might hurt someone's feelings“ = now becomes passive aggressive warning as you are passing off your original warning to „someone“ else. „ I believe that's a criminal offense“ you believe something sarcastically which isn’t a fact, but you poke fun at it believing it to be true in contradiction to the USAs „freedom of speech“ rhetoric. And finally „in merry ol' England“ where you imply through the use of ol' that England is the backwards undeveloped country of 200 years ago. Thus perceiving that your way of life in the USA is superior to that of England = a dig at a different country.

So unless your little statement to Offa didn’t mean that, my reply to you was and is glaringly correct.

Sorry I was about to go to bed, just noticed you from same place where Hitler lived/concurred/ etc…. What principle you follow? I have enough fact and proof to say. Do you still survive your winter with Russian gas or refined oil we bought from Russia and sold to you?

Again, I won't start fresh, But I will reply if you start geopolitical game. This is the last warning, I just want to be here as as just a numismatic, no political person, don't target me based on my religions/ Color/ language/state/country

@King

You seem glaringly unaware of the irony of your statement, which statement is patently false in the first place.

However, I invite you to cite examples where I “often refer to other countries as inferior / different to your own country," and have “a dig at perceived ways of life that [I] do not like or disagree with”. Given that I ”often" make such comments it shouldn't be hard to find so many examples out of my 700+ posts here.

Yeah sure, I’ll waste my time looking though all your posts. Not.

@pramodambady if you didn’t know, a comment replying to a specific post from a member within a thread can be done by selecting the reply icon within the message. This is different from the reply button at the end of the thread. When this happens, the comment (a conversation between 2 or more members within the thread) is highlighted in grey above the reply so context is within the reply.  You have read my reply to TCon and confused it as a reply to you. It is not a reply to your comment, I am not talking to you, but to TCon only about a comment he made to Offa. You can read this in the grey above my comment so that you can understand that you have become all worked up for nothing.

Again the comment was not a reply to your comment. I have nothing to add to your comment or subsequent comments because you mistook my reply as a reply to you. I AM NOT REPLYING TO YOUR COMMENT.

I wonder what I did to receive all that scorn from an otherwise nice person?

You cite one message of 700+ plus and use that to support your argument that I “often” denegrate other countries. Worse yet, your attempt to deconstruct my message stands solely on conjecture. To be blunt, your argument is supported not by fact, but by lazy rage. As has been suggested by others, if you wish to continue this discussion, please contact me by PM. Until then, good luck out there. Merry Christmas!

Please explain how your message „Careful @Offa , your comments might hurt someone's feelings, and I believe that's a criminal offense in merry ol' England“ is meant to be interpreted then? So that my conjecture can be disputed, because at the moment you aren’t offering any alternative. My interpretation wasn’t done by „lazy rage“ but through a considered and thought out process of interpretation of the English language and how myself and others could interpret it.

And no I will not leave myself open to individual abuse or accusations by contacting you via PM, anything I or you have to say can be written in open forum under the eyes of other members. If you don’t like me calling you out on such comments in the forum you shouldn’t write them in the first place as per Forum Policy https://en.numista.com/help/forum-policy-77.html
