The coat of arms was granted on 21st July 1970 when two districts were merged.
Mill wheel at the top which was for Schalksmuhle the bottom three leaf cluster is supposed to be european holly for Hulsheid. The chequered part in the middle (in flags etc is depicted as red and white) was to represent the County of Mark.
