I had a go at the design and lettering

[16.5 mm silver]

                                        Red= fairly certain / Green = maybe

Thanks ZacUK! Thats a start. Much appreciated! There is for certain a crown above the shield you outlined.

On the hunt

I looked for over an hour, with left-facing portraits but none then

with that  D G IS D  lettering suitably spaced. So then also if there were any

similar, would have looked on the reverse for a shield in one corner.

Any other lettering / details that you can see in those pictures?

Thanks

Im wondering if there aren't shields on the back like this, after looking more last night.

Thanks for your help!

My first reaction was that the bust could be Philip II of Spain, whose Low Country coins had legend like PHS D G HISP Z REX DVX GELR .

But this is smaller than coins of his, and a bit of a stretch to find on ein Pennsylvania (though Spanish silver was in widespread use in the colonies) .

Another small silver type with left facing bust that could show up in North America are Venezuela ¼ bolivar types, but these do not have a continuous legend obverse.

Thanks - that sounds good. Looking again at the IS lettering it

does seem H before and P after. Now to find similar with that D on left.

It is NOT that second picture - but similar.

Thanks for the help, yes, and most south American coins have that spanish influence. Pillars, single large shield etc.. this is a tough one..

An additional thought …

With coins like this that are in such poor condition, we need to be careful of pareidolia, in which our brains are biased to see a pattern which may not really be there.

I think the only undeniable feature remaining on this coin are the few letters we can see obverse, and probably a bust

The first letter D (at about 9:00) does not fit very well with a PHILIP, but … G HISP … appears likely, since we know this combination appeared on many coins.  The size is about right for a Mexico half real, but I've not found one of these with a left facing bust.

Fully agree here, and after looking at many worn coins, I know that can happen. However, that to say this, Im certain of the shield pattern on the reverse, as the loop lets me see better than I can grasp with the camera lens.

I believe they are called heater shields? With crowns above them. One is definitely upside down (on the left) and one facing up (right). Then the large shield with the large crown at top kind of in the backgroun.

The left facing bust  is an issue in general in seems, or maybe it narrows option  down.

Thanks for your help. You are much better at this than I, as I dont know how to search using letter combinations as you seem to be doing. Any search tips appreciate, for example, how to search by size when this coin 16.5 one way ad 16.7 another.

 I always go a little either side - so  16.5  +/- 1.5 = 15-18 is what I put in the search.

Though that only finds a coin if the page has been created with a size.

Same with years - if it has ND [no date] then it also will not be found.

If a metal is not the page it also will not be in a search result.  And so on …

Is there a way to search by Left or Right Facing bust? Not sure what the ‘Tag’ area can be used for.

Thanks!

The only way to search is by writing it.

It will only find items with those words.

left bust

right bust

so these below will not be found

left facing

left portrait

looking left

and so on. Until someone creates a search filter …

Some have portraits turning half way, or facing front …
