This is almost certainly not an official French circulation coin. It looks more like a souvenir, fantasy strike or replica token made in the style of a Louis XIV French coin, as the back has a Spanish design and the details look kind of soft and the edge too round for a hammered coin.
Exactly what I said ½ hour ago, I was too lazy to find it though 😉, now I have more time a quick explanation;
You all know what an Abacus is right? The counting frame used in ancient times to do complex mathematics on.
Now imagine a table or other flat surface, with lines drawn on it, put these Counter Tokens, Rechnung Pfenings, within or on the lines and slide them back and forth like the beads on the Abacus, and you can do your mathematical calculations.
They were used, I am assuming, because traders didn’t want to put coins on the table (at risk of theft), so these tokens were produced instead.
