Help identifying the Overstrike (German States)

9 сообщений • просмотрено 90 раз

Good morning.

I have an overstrike.

The coin is a German States - Mainz (Bistum) 3 Pfennig 1759 (often also “state of Erfurt”) - Johann Friedrich Karl

The Undertype is very clear is places, and I would like to identify what coin this was minted over.   Any help is very welcome.

I see what you mean.

Perhaps we are looking for a coin with a coat of arms that has two Mainz wheels and an episcopal key?

Maybe a lead is one of the coins in this lot :  https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=10703708

His is copper so it would have to be overstruck on another copper coin

Definitely overstruck on a coin from this bishop https://en.numista.com/catalogue/ruler.php?id=5821

That coin - same year / size / denomination / metal.

Token collector [1600-1899] with some coins

It has two wheels and four rectangles - all in same places >

which those rectangles are part of a key - also seen on both.

So, the coin on the top later became the second coin - all same reverse.

Thank you very Much, Zac.

I believe this is correct.   Odd that it was the same year and same denomination with an alternate face.

Do we know if one is specifically for Mainz and one for Erfurt or one is the Bishopric and one the Princely State or why were there two varients?

With kindest Regards,

Kyle
