Coin found in New Holland Tractor.

In December I bought a tractor that had just been imported from Orleans in France.

The glovebox was empty apart from a bit of dirt, long story short I was going to clean out the dirt today and found this coin.

The coin is dated 1988, the tractor is 1997, France changed to the Euro in 2002, so this coin has presumably been bouncing around this tractor for the past 23~24 years.

I'm surprised it's still in this good of a condition despite that being in that abrasive dirt.

Just thought it was interesting.

Firstly congrats on the tractor. Blessed with an obsolete coin from the imported country with a story to tell about your purchase. No doubt been there for a while since before the euro change over too.

Common coin but keep it safe for sentimental purpose. Probably not many French tractors with pre euro centimes knocking about in them that then end up reaching a collector that needed a tractor. Thanks for sharing . Cool find.

That reminds me of like old forgotten wallets and purses that get uncovered years later and yeah i wouldn’t be surprised if this occurs when cars are scrapped and during the stripping process I wouldn’t be surprised if change especially pre euro or silver change is found.

I’ve had the privilege of having a searching through older tourist change which is probably similar to your case.

Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.

Long time ago, 1985 or so, I bought a car, Peugeot 404, which I wanted to dismantle for parts for my other 404.
I bought it for 100,- good-old guilders. Under the backseat I found more than 400,- guilders in different coins and notes.

...you can run,  but you can't hide...

Why did you import a 30 year old French tractor? Surely you could have bought a better one in your own country (Assuming you are in the UK or America).

I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

He's in Ireland.

If it runs, then why not buy an old tractor?

Aidan.

In 2018, in Bremen, Germany,  i have found a wallet in the street (in a box where everyone can pick up, it is free). The content was British coins, newest were 2 shiny 20 pence struck in 1982. Several coins were shillings and florins before decimalization. I guess German citizen was in UK in 1982/3, and content wallet still frozen/forgotten in a drawer for 35 years.

How interesting. Makes sense. The shillings and florins were still in circulation at that point too and used as 5 pence and 10 pence though I don't know how common they were by the 80's but definitely still around. Alot of Brits also went over to Germany in the 80s for labour work alongside military servicemen. I'm going with your German citizen visiting UK theory for 1 reason. If it was a Brit in Germanys wallet at that time the shillings (5 pence) would've been used in public phones or cigarette machines as a 1 Deutschemark. A very big problem at the time as 5 pence was considerably less value than a mark but still worked in machines as a mark.

As a mechanic you would not believe how many coins I've found under the center console or under the carpet, behind door trim, etc. I work on modern cars but its always interesting to see what kind of coins there are in there. Had a truck sold in Canada and then shipped down to my dealer in Oregon and it had some Canadian change under the seat. Cars from the east coast usually have Philadelphia mint marks on the coins in there. the vast majority of what I've found is 90s and 2000s commemorative quarters
