In the Dime the Mint Mark should be over the date, so no mint mint mark means Philly mint. Could it be the last word of the initials of the engraver "JS" that you see? A picture of the coin would certainly clarify it.
“A man without a hobby is only half alive.”
Franklin Delano Roosevelt
That is a good guess but the initials are clearly visible separate from this "S" stamp. I viewed it with an attachment made for my son's telescope and it's a plain S just below the date. Something also odd about this coin is that I can't really decide whether it says 1971 or 1977 as the last number in the date is speculative.
I have been going crazy all night trying to find a similar example online and as far as I can tell, mine is one of a kind. I wish I had a way to post a picture of it. I truly and honestly believe I have something quite unique.
It's important that you all understand that I certainly wouldn't waste any of our time on something I wasn't perplexed about...I can assure you all of THAT! I DO realize that you probably get thousands of wanna be millionaires on here who think they have something pretty spectacular but I'm not one of them. I am just trying to get some sound advice from people with more experience than I have. I've been emailing "specialists." The "s" is just below the 9 in the date.
Dear elobo
very strange. First is the letter pushed in the coin, or is it raised up? Raised up I mean how they look now The s is above the face. This is how it should look like
Had this one on my desk. If the letter is pushed in the face of the coin, someone could have did it outside of the mint. Is it silver or clap?
yours daryl
Oh slow down if it is Spectacular, you want to have your head on.
I also note that the S is of similar size yet different "font" than the S on JS which is also plainly there. This S is separate and different style of S.
I could not tell you I was thinking the s from the coin before stayed in die and fell out on yours and got pressed in. But that would be very flat. The only thing I can tell you. On Saturday take to a coin dealer. And have them take a look. Let us know what it is.
thank you yours daryl
Trust me, I wish I could post a picture right now just as much if not more but I will try and see if I can get any old cell phone's to work and take a pic but no camera. No faint mint mark anywhere else. The coin quite frankly doesn't seem to be "clad" either. I know that's also impossible as I've read but I'm just reporting what I see.
I know china made copy of world coins as a teaching thing for there bank tellers, ect. They made bills to.And some did get out.??
Have seen a few they look like the coin or bill. but different

I think it's a perfectly normal coin, maybe a grease filled die but we can't see the other side so can't tell.
IMHO it's worth 10 cents.
I collect anything: If it's Italian or Italian states i collect it even more!

Do the fact there is no D on the front above the year is just normal?
There is no "D" because it was produced at the Philadelphia Mint, if it had a "D" it would be from the Denver Mint. Bottom line, it's perfectly normal.
