I learned about Terry Fox in school (so he is pretty famous). He was a Canadian marathon runner who got cancer and had to get his leg amputated. To make a point, he decided to run across Canada (not an easy task, it's lucky he wasn't born Russian) with only one leg to raise money and awareness. Starting in Newfoundland he made it about a third of the way before cancer spread to his other organs, and he had to stop: he died at 23. Despite not making it all the way, the annual Marathon of Hope (or the "Terry Fox Run") became one of Canada's largest charitable events, with almost every town sponsoring a local marathon event. So he is regarded as a real Canadian hero.
I realized, though, that if I was not from Canada and I had found this page on Numista, I would have thought "huh, who's this guy" and then moved on, not knowing anything else about Terry Fox. So I am starting this thread for you to share a little history about people, places, or events that are seen on the coins of your country, and why they were chosen for that occasion. Have fun
