1889 Victoria Crown

5 сообщений
Hi!

I've bought this coin, it's a 1889 crown, gilded, and transformer to be a brooch.

29,15 g (with the brooch)

What would you do with a coin modified like this? Keep it as it is, or trying to turn it as a normal coin?

What is the grade for you? And the value?

Thank you,

Antoine

grade is XF for me (there's a bit of wear on the veil and hair otherwise it'd be AU)

I would say remove the broach if you can do so safely without damaging the coin.

Unsure of the value, book value for XF is £60 but obviously the broach and guilding would decrease that a bit.
Hi!

Thanks neil for your opinion.

It's beautiful. I would probably keep it a while but I know because I've done it before with coins that have been jewellery... It would get on my nerves and would end up selling it as you're not going to get it back to how it was without damaging said coin. :(
I can relate to what Mark is saying. The coin in itself is a lovely example but I couldn't have it in my collection as I would be constantly frustrated by the fact that it is impaired and I would wish that I had a "perfect" example.

I have a similar issue with a 1924 South Africa Florin that came into my possession. When I first glimpsed it in the lot I thought, "Oh, wow, it's a beaut!" and then, on closer inspection, I saw that it was holed. There was no way that I could let that sit in my collection sitting next to all my other "complete" coins so you know what I did? I put a split ring through the hole and I now carry it around with me on my keyring and I love it  :)
Just because you can't see it ... doesn't mean it isn't there - Anon.
