Victoria Newfoundland coin - special 1899 coin - help with value?

9 сообщений
Okay... so on a certain buying site I am bidding on a Newfoundland 20 cent piece from 1899. Now, this particular coin happens to have "hooked 9s", which makes it much more rare and therefore more valuable. Here are the pictures that were given:

The NGC world price guide has the pricing listed as such for this coin.

So my question to you all is this: What grade would you consider this coin? I had thought originally that it was a F quality coin, but upon further scrutination I can see that there are VG spots on the coin, particularly on the reverse. Do people actually evaluate coins and give them grades anywhere between VG8 and F12? I have to say that I don't particularly like that numerical style of coin evaluation myself, but it seems to be en vogue right now, so I suppose I will have to stick to that method of evaluating monetary worth of a coin.

I currently have a bid on it for $29, which makes it 2 dollars too many if it would only receive the VG8 grade, but somewhat on par if there's anything between this VG8 and the F12. I am, in essence, wondering whether to let it go if someone else bids on it.

Myself, if i was biding on this coin, would go as high as $40.

Do not argue with ignorant people .. !! They will drag you down to their level, then pulverize you with experience ...
Now see, I put a VF on that coin.  All of the major details are there and some of the finer lines in the hair still exist.

You are right about the finer lines in the hair... but I am always afraid to put VF on a coin like this just from pictures. (But if it was VF... omg the value!!) However, I think I do believe this is basically an F coin, and much more valuable than the $29 I have on it.

Thank you both so much for your input. I definitely needed it.

Its an F still worth having though !

I absolutely agree! I don't really have the money to bid more than maybe $40 for it and it's already up to $36, so we'll see... maybe I'll make the leap and go up to $50... idk.

it's an 'f' for sure. I have an ICCS certified 1881 version of this coin in F-12 and it is slightly worse than your coin.

The NGC values are off. The 'trends' section in Canadian Coin News lists the 1899 hooked 99 coin as being worth $25 in G, $50 in VG, $100 in F and $220 in VF.

I would pay $60 for this coin without hesitating (hint hint if you want to buy it and then sell it to me). I doubt you'll get it for less than $75 though...

good luck

I would actually consider buying it for the $50 and selling it to you for $60. I desperately need money because I went into overdraft and this and that, so it's very tempting. I guess I'll have to post how the auction turns out, and if I decide to sell. :P

It's nicer than the Victoria F's on this site:

I wouldn't hesitate at $50.
