Quote: These Hindu Indian temple tokens were minted at various workshops in and around the city of Calcutta for use across Northern India. They were made primarily for votive offerings and as religious gifts.
Design on all ramatanka temple tokens depict various scenes from the Hindu epic, the Ramayama (Rama’s Journey). In this case it is the Dubar scene on the obverse side depicting Rama and his consort Sita enthroned at their coronation that took place after their triumphant return to Ayodhya in which Rama could reclaim his kingdom there. The standard Dubar scene shows Rama and Sita seated on a platform (Dubar) attended by his half-brothers Baratha, Lakshman and Satrughra. Underneath the dubar is Hanuman the Monkey God offering his devotions to the couple and to whom Rama owed his eventual success.
The standard reverse side shows Rama to the left holding his trident and his half-brother Lakshman with his bow. The Devanagari inscription reads as Rama Ladamana Janaka Jabala Hanamanaka. The pseudo date of 1790 is often shown on the lower edge of most ramatanka but does not represent any actual mintage date.
Size: 1 1/8” (28mm) diameter.
Material: Silver plated on brass.
Weight: 14.0g
