Which leads to a question I am frequently asked on my stall. How do proof coins get into common circulation?
One answer, which I know to be correct, is that here in Southampton and probably the rest of the UK we have a lot of drug addicts who break into houses, finding proof coin sets they smash them open and circulate them because to them a 20p or 50p or £5 coin is just a 20p, 50p or £5 coin.
So do not be overly surprised to find proof coins in your British change
Thanks you guys . Matt that is sad, but we have the same problem here. Thats the second UK coin i have found from proof or sets. I also have a UK 5 pence 1990 large from a set. Thank you both again yours daryl
