I'm guessing that many members buy coins through eBay. I do and have managed to get the odd one that I think is a bargain too. What does annoy me (and apologies for offending if any members are guilty of this ) is the number of listings that list a coin as "rare" or even "very rare" when they are anything but rare. A current example on eBay at the moment is a "rare" UK 2p coin from 1979, a year when apparently 260,200,000 were minted, in normal circulated condition and with no mint errors etc., asking price £2.99 plus £1.70 postage! Good profit there then! The sad thing is that occasionally people do fall for the "rare" tag and buy a perfectly easy to obtain coin at a stupid price. Does anyone else get annoyed about this? That's it, rant over, thank you.
Yes this is a very common problem. Infact ebay may as well name its Coins section Rare Coins. But in all seriousness to call a 1979 circulation Two Pence Very Rare is an out and out lie. In Unc it has a book value of £2 and the postage is fair if it is sent signed for. If the coin is not Unc the word Scam comes to mind

Yes, that's my thoughts exactly. I do try and sell a few coins on eBay or eBid, but leave it up to the potential buyers as to whether they think something is rare or not. I suppose it depends on the particular coin, but is there any opinion as to what makes a circulated coin rare?

yeah, low mintage and high publicity such as the kew gardens 50p. the papers went mad and then an ebay explosion followed. i think now even if the prices have dropped it would be a rare occasion to find one in your change.
The fact is the Kew Garden 50p is not a rare coin. Its price has been driven high as you correctly mentioned, by news papers and ebay. There will be a large number of people who have little or no interest in numismatics read the papers and jumped right on the Kew Gardens band wagon. I bet there's a ton of people who have hoarded 20+ of the things thinking one day they will hit it rich when they sell them. The truth is the money to be made on them has already been made and price wise the only way is down.

we all know that mate but i was just generalising that the only way to find a rare circulation coin is because of low mintage & hype.
My theory is that the royal mint arent selling coins like they once were so.. have recently been making comments to the papers and such to create a false scarcity in the hope norml non=collectors will think any commemorative is worth having. Then as kids grow up learning of these rare and exotic styled coins it will breed the next generation.

When I see a seller describing every coin in his inventory as "WOW XXX RARE" I know with absolute certainty that this is someone with whom I will never do business.
First there is the ethical question, why trade with someone who routinely misrepresents what he is offering, not occasionally but 100% of the time. If you choose to do business with such types you ought not to be shocked to find out that he's using stock photo's of decent coins but actually mailing out bent, holed, worn out junk. Or maybe he'll just take your money and run.
There is also a practical, economic question. In the unlikely event that the seller ever manages to put his hands on a genuinely scarce or even rare coin how is he going to describe it, how is he going to differentiate it from the other 1,000's of XX RARE!!!!!! coins he has for sale? Well he isn't and is publicly admitting that he has no ambitions beyond making a few bucks peddling overpriced pocket change.
It's not just an eBay problem. Supposedly reputable web references are often equally misleading, most notably Numista. There are hundreds of coins with mintages in the multi millions which are described in the Numista database as "rare", "very rare" and even "ultra rare". It doesn't do much for the site's credibility.
Let those without sin cast the first stone.
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.
Make Numismatics Great Again!

Ha! Ha! You're so right Phil! I was looking through my Germany swaps earlier today and saw on my collection list on Numista that I have a "rare" 1900J 10 Pfennig with a mintage of just 5,720,000!

I got three of them in one day in xf from one group of coins How rare can it be.
Right now anything numista as listed at the end of a coin{rare } i find as a joke. What makes the catalog somewhat of a joke. Its a to bad that really makes numista catlog have "credibilty" isuses

Yes, I can't understand why coins with 500,000 have (rare) next to them, please let some moderator take all the "rares" off.
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!
People trying to sell stuff on eBay use "rare" as a sentence enhancer. It means nothing and I've long since learned to ignore it. Two things that bother me a lot more: stock photos and descriptions calling coins silver when they're not.
I guess that it is a bit like a disease. One does it, second one does it, and then... how can you, poor seller, list ur stuff without proclaiming it to be Ultra Mega XX Super Bleedin' Rare. Because people start thinking that it is a way to draw attention and its a must-do.
I barely ever click on any of these ads. I barely ever actually visit eBay for exactly this reason - takes too long time to try and find genuine coins worth looking at. It is just too full of "get rich fast, no conscience required" type of sellers to appeal to me.
Maybe some day I will change my attitude towards eBay, but at the moment I will not spend any time there.
As pnightingale said, better to stay clear of the sellers whose every listing is "rare".
