I have corrected some mintage data on this coin but there are some redundant years that need deleting. The coin was issued from 1968 to 1981, so the years 1984, 1988, 1990, 1991 should be removed.

Many thanks - Rick

done thanks - will now look for all circulating decimalized UK coinage first

Hello,

sorry to revive this one, but on the coin page it's indicated that there were 2 Mints (London (up until 1975) and Llantrisant (starting 1968)).

I have a 5 New Pence (2nd Portrait) from 1970.

How to determine in which Mint it was conned, I don't see any markings. The coin is exactly as shown in the coin page pictures.

Thanks

All the new decimal coinage was struck at Llantrisant.

Good morning@radrick007, Not entirely true unfortunately about all decimal coins being minted in Llantrisant., in what started as a short response has now turned into a much longer one, given my research as below. If someone would be so good as to update the catalogue entries as appropriate accordingly once you have digested the information that would be useful.

The 5p, 10p & 50p were minted in London at some points in the transition to Wales, only 1/2p, 1p & 2p were minted in Wales from day one of its operation. https://www.royalmintmuseum.org.uk/journal/history/the-move-to-south-wales/london-to-llantrisant/.

@OSS-117 You will not have any mint mark to differentiate the difference. That was the point, they didn't want people to think there was a difference.

In my further research, I can muddy the water even further as between December 1967- September 1969 the RM used a factory in Bridgend for training purpose and they minted ~251 million coins of 1p, 2p, 1/2p, using 9,504 dies in 1968(Royal Mint Annual Report 1968 Volume No.99 Image 17 - The Royal Mint Museum)….do we want to add this bit of history into the mix? It closed at the end of September 1969 (Royal Mint Annual Report 1969 Volume No.100 Image 4 - The Royal Mint Museum, Royal Mint Annual Report 1969 Volume No.100 Image 30 - The Royal Mint Museum) having produced 15 million (2 million 1p and 13 million 2p) in 1969

in 1968 only 2p decimal coins were minted in quantity in Wales (Royal Mint Annual Report 1968 Volume No.99 Image 19 - The Royal Mint Museum)

Tower mint also minted 5p, 10p and 50p in 1970/early 1971 (Royal Mint Annual Report 1970 Volume No.101 Image 6 - The Royal Mint Museum)

Minting figures from April 1971 onwards gets complicated as the reporting year moved to the financial year of April. So knowing whether a coin was minted in the first 3 months of 1972 or not is hard to determine.

Minting of circulation coins ended at some point in march 1973 according to the 1973 Annual report (Royal Mint Annual Report 1973 Volume No.104 Image 4 - The Royal Mint Museum) Proof coin production ended at the end of March 1974 (Royal Mint Annual Report 1973 Volume No.104 Image 7 - The Royal Mint Museum)

Side note looks like we need to add Llantrisant mint for pre-decimal half pennies (½ Penny - Elizabeth II (1st portrait; without 'BRITT:OMN') - United Kingdom – Numista) as in 1968, they minted 40 million I suspect these were the 1970 issue as there was no 1968 issue. Also we need to add pre-decimal penny (1 Penny - Elizabeth II (1st portrait; without 'BRITT:OMN') - United Kingdom – Numista) to have the Llantrisant mint as in 1970 they minted 7,353,600.

Also 4,000 + 47,432 proof 50 Pence - Elizabeth II (2nd portrait; Entry into EEC) - United Kingdom – Numista were struck at tower mint, I have already updated the entry.

I am glad that the Mint Reports are fairly comprehensive.

Damn, that some precision.
thanks for taking the time to inform us.

So in the case of those coins, we could just say it was minted in … UK ?

@OSS-117 yup that was the point. In the transition they wanted it to be seemless and it pretty much was. You'll also note in the annual reports there was a fair chunk of outsourcing to the Birmingham mint and another company for foreign currency.
