Anyone know their Oriental coins?

8 сообщений
Hi,

New to the forum. I picked up these three coins yesterday for 3 Euros each. The dealer assured me they weren't silver, but I have a feeling they are (they certainly 'ring' like silver coins). Anyway, I thought they were worth the price even if they aren't.

They are about the same diameter as a silver dollar, but not as thick. The one in the top-left is slightly smaller and has a reeded edge; the other two (the one with the two dragons rampant, and the one with the lettering in the big square plaque) have Chinese (or Japanese?) lettering around the edge, plus Western lettering that reads "GIORGIL · GIORGI · GIORGIL…" and then two more letters that might be "NO"

Reverse(?):

Obverse(?):

I thought at first they might be Chinese dragon dollars, but now I'm not so sure. Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks in advance.

Winston
are they magnetic
Good point. No. Which again suggests they may be silver (mind you, Cu-Ni isn't either, as I recall).

Hey there!

These are Silver Tael coins from Ancient China. The one on the top right I think is a pattern coin, but I'm not too sure which province they are from...

You should add them to Numista, if you haven't already. What a great deal! These could be worth 50 Euro each! However, the striking is too fine. But to counter that they are silver, most likely, due to the colour of the coins and the tarnishing.

Add them to Numista and I'll do some research. Thanks!

I'm afraid to say that these coins (supposed to be Chinese) are fakes. For example, the last one is imitating https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces20246.html.
It is very common that the Chinese silver coins are imitated in China, and sometimes the two sides aren't even supposed to be on the same coin (for example your top left one).
It's risky to buy these Chinese coins without prior research.

But if it's silver, it's still well worth the 3euros.

True! They do look fake, at first inspection, although they look like they have silver content. It's best to rather call them "reproductions." However, if you add them to the catalogue, you should add them to *Tokens*.

And yes they are certainly worth more than 3 Euros. Probably no more than 10.

Great! Thanks to both of you.

I had heard that these coins were often imitated, so wasn't expecting too much.
When would they have been done? And how do you tell a fake from the genuine article? Is there a site that would help in some research?

As I say, I'm pretty certain they are silver (or at least a fair alloy of), so they're not completely worthless knock-offs.

One last question: I'm happy to post them (even as fakes, for general interest). How do I go about it?

Thanks again.

You seem to have stumbled on one ;)
