As a euro user and living close to national borders of eurozone countries, I would never agree with your opinion, even there are more and more dangers between the Greek crisis still unsolved and the arise of some eurosceptics. But I prefer seeing the practical side, abd the funny search of foreign coinage in my change. And please, do not speak about "legit" coins...
More over, you can't compare old coins from the end of XIXth century or the beginning of the XXth one with modern coinage. This is too much old times for our economy.

Цитата: "kolikko99"German mark was ruined long before the euro.
Pre-euro coins weren't a loss but the banknotes were in my opinion.
All this was turned into this:
I agree for the Mark, but I think this concerns all European currencies, this was due to WWI and amplified by WWII.
For the French banknote your style would be maybe better like former ones, as the last series were a little more original than former series...

Do not forget that coins of 2 mark and upper denominations are not unified in the German Empire, but specific of each German nation inside the Reich (excluding the Reichsland Elsass-Lothringen which is not a German nation but directly administrated by the Empire)... Look well the coins, you'll find the same mess in higher denominations

Coins:
Like already stated one can not easily compare coinage of for the time considerable value with something that some people throw away because it has so little value.
Yes, they are not the prettiest coins in the but I have seen far more ugly ones.
Banknotes:
I like the theme from antiquity (5€) to the modern (500).
The Euro was intentionally designed neutral ... you can't simply put some guy/gal from one nation on a bill in a union of many countries without stepping on some toes. So the theme architecture was chosen and non existing buildings with the style of different eras were designed ... at the end a good compromise.
