1938 Ten Centimes - France without dots in date?

3 сообщений
Hi all, I am going through some coins I got at a garage sale and noticed the 1938 10 centimes (nickel-bronze) doesn't have any dots in or surrounding the date and so therefore I would think based on this site it would be the "essai" version? What does essai mean and does that mean they are more valuable possibly? I tried looking up definitions but the results seemed to be all in French... thanks for your help!
An essay (essai) is a trial piece, the object of which is to test the die and to note the detail of the design. They are frequently made of different thicknesses and of other materials than the coins subsequently to be struck. (See also Piedfort which means any coin struck on an unusually thick planchet such as a trial piece or essay)

Your coin is not an essai and is probably:

Oh that's right I forgot the 1938 date was in the other category. Thank you for the info!
