What would cause this 1942 British 3 pence coin, on the right, to appear copper colored.
Corrosion.
I know exactly what's happened to it. Someone has tried to clean it using vinegar.

Or a weak sulfuric acid dip commonly used for silver coins.
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.

Vinegar is an acid too. Copper is the only acid-resisting component from this alloy.

My grandfather died recently and my father brought me home some old pennies and halfpennies that used to belong to him. He said "they were a bit dirty, so I cleaned them up with some vinegar" and he handed me some pink monstrosities like the picture above. I put on a brave face and thanked him kindly, but I was dying inside.
