Good Morning
I have obtained this token a few months back. It is a sterling sliver, 32mm across and weigh 17,9 grams. it was given out in 1961 when the Union of South Africa turned into a Republic. It has a full set of SA Union sterling marks and is in its SAM box. It was also minted in gold and bronze. See http://southafricanmedals.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=47&category_id=1&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1
I am trying to figure out how many were minted and what the value may be?
Is it on Numista yet and how do I ad it?

Hi Jannie

I believe this to be a commemorative medal of the Cape Town castle as shown on your link.
Not sure on mintage but would agree on $30+
Try Kaplan Book/ catalog of South African coins, There are also a number of medalls/ medalions issued by SA Mint. And if this medal is ipmportant, it might be listed there

"Alex kaplan`s catalog of South African coins" or something slose in title... Try to find as early edition as you can, - 1962 -1970 years

Hi
This medal is important. It was made to commemorate the Independence from Britain. Interesting to note that it still bares the Union sterling mark of a lions head in a U...after this year the sterling mark turned into the Republic mark of a head of a springbok (see photo).

I looked in my Kaplan catalog, and then realized my copy was published in 1950(8
I did not find the medal in Hern's catalog of SA coins and patterns.
