Old and knackered

But enough about me, anyone an idea of what this may be?

Possibly Irish? It's obviously bronze or copper, 27 mm in diameter. The other side is almost completely worn smooth with age, so there's nothing to be gleaned from that.

Yes, I know it's not rare or valuable (I don't need to be told that, thanks).

Oh, I got it in a wholesale batch of junk coins.

Matt
Matt,
Usually I'm wrong...but is it this one?

Also...it looks as though the date is 1682...but this coin is 1686. Anyway...you can't miss the Cláirseach.

Its certainly a very close match, excepting the difference in date. Enough for me to think its an Irish half penny.

Thanks.

Matt
Ar ha!

Following on from bam777's excellent suggestion, I reviewed my copy of "Coins of Scotland Ireland and the Islands" and find a Charles II 1682 copper half penny was minted which is almost identical to the later James II 1685 and 1686 mintages, excepting the different king's portrait on the other side.

Sorry, I have no further details.

Okay I have added it to the catalogue, information supplied from Seaby Coins of Scotland Ireland and the Islands (1984), measurement based on my own example. Please correct as necessary.

Matt
Great! I'm glad you found that information. Well done.
