Can someone provide ID (state and time) for the below kreuzer?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you !
Thin silver coin, diameter: 30 mm weight: 4.55 g
I'm 99% sure that it's not from the Swiss cantons although it does look similar. The coat of arms with rampant lions reminds me of Bavaria (but it's not). Sorry I don't know where to focus next. I'm sure that someone collects these and will know exactly where it's from. Just have to wait.
It's pretty worn and many letters are unreadable but the legend might be MATTHI D G ROM IMP SEM AVG so this coin could be related to Matthias I so you can extend your search to Dutch republic.
Thank you all for your effort and contributions. And of cause special thanks to muskathund who solved the puzzle. I am very impressed, as I my selves couldn’t find a workable trace to follow (I have in vain tried to seek out the coat of arms).
As a matter of fact I know (almost) nothing about coins or numismatics. I am an amateur archeologist, and occasionally I find old coins in relation to an excavation that can help define the time period for a specific event. I this case the period 1614-19 fits nicely into the picture.
Best regards
