Newfoundland 2 Dollars 1870, authentic?

9 сообщений
I am simply wondering if this coin is authentic or if it's a fake/copy of the original coin?
Unfortunately I can't provide more pics than these, since it's not my coin. The asking price is 198 USD.

Thanks!

I wonder whats going on on the reverse.... There are areas that look like gold plating is coming off? Does anyone else see that or is it just bad lighting?

I think you might be correct, and is there a casting pit near the lower dot to the left of "Dollars?"

Yeah.... Another thing i was wondering about is the color. Even in bad lighting the color is really off....

Also. extra drop of plating in U of Two Hundred Cents (?) and U of One Hundred Pence looks undersized(?)

Slabbed versions in this grade (I think VF+ to EF-) selling north of $500 Cdn so, if I was spending that kind money, I'd want to be damn sure.

This one is supposedly real, and if I wasn't told that, I would think it was fake from all the little bumps and odd dentils. Thus, I can say nothing conclusive about your example. I recommend asking the seller what the weight is, and if it has a reeded edge (and if it does have a reeded edge, I would conclude it's a fake).

In this day and age, there's no good excuse for a dealer not to provide high quality pictures of their coins ─ especially gold or any other high-end coins.

Even if this one is not high grade, the price seems to be quite low ─ an opportunity not to be missed if it is real. The price would perhaps be right for an 1882 one, which is the most common, but not for an 1870.

So, poor pictures + great price = very suspicious.

Is this one in Wikipedia authentic? On your coin, what made me suspicious is what seemed like a poor rendering of the decorations on each side of the word DOLLARS, but they look very much like the Wikipedia example. ... ... Perhaps the Wikipedia one is a fake?? Note the surface, too, once you enlarge the picture, but may be I am just too suspicious...

EDIT: Given that it was sold by Heritage Auctions, I suppose I am, indeed, too suspicious. :~ But my reasons to be suspicious of yours still stand.

Looks more like water scale or alkali to me.
