Roman Provinces - Pisidia Antioch - Philipp II?

7 сообщений
I think this is a Roman Provinces coin, and I want to add it to the catalog [and thus increase my country count by one], but I want to make sure that all the information that I am adding is correct.I am far better with modern coinage than ancient coins.

It came with some handwritten information but I only understand what some of it means:

Obverse information:
"Phillip, Jr. (247-249) Pisidia, Antioch" would be the who, when, and where
"radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust r" would be describing the portrait
"IMP M IVL PHILLIPVS P F AVG PM" would be the lettering on the obverse
"AE26" would be an identifying number for the coin, but when I checked the Wildwinds site, it sounded like the AE27. http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/pisidia/antioch/t.html
I don't know what "GIC 4125A L17" means. This was written next to the information about the obverse.

Reverse Information:
"PX Legionary eagle between two standards" I take to be a description of the image
"CAES AN-TIOCH CL" and "Inex.:SR" I presume is the the writing around the image
I don't know what the following means: "Ob as S. 4125 PX type sim. to S .4193" "Leg. as5.4125" "MYXXVII-335 BMC123 MY0389" and then there is a letter "B" with a dot under it and something that looks like a trident.

Am I understanding the description correctly? Do the parts I don't understand mean anything to you and do they matter? Is it AE26 or is AE27 correct?

I figure the more accurate I am when I submit the request to add a coin, the less mess there is to clean up later.
Thank you for your assistance!
Hello,

Just a few points:

→ AE 26 or 27: this is based on the diameter of the coin. For the same issue, coins will vary slightly in diameter, but your as well should be about 26 or 27 mm.

→ In ex. = In exergue (lower part of the field, on the reverse, where the mint mark is).

→ Ob as S. 4125 RX type sim. to S .4193 = "obverse as Sear 4125; reverse type similar to Sear 4193 (I suppose Sear's Greek Imperial Coins and Their Values).

→ BMC = one of the British Museum Coin Catalogues.

Thank you! Without your help I'd still be staring at the paper and shaking my head in confusion!
One more question:
The add-a-coin form asks "Name/type of the coin". Does anyone know it's name?
Thanks
The coin you have referenced on Wildwinds is the correct one, just note that it says - SNG Pfalz 111-112.
The coin pictured is - 111, it appears to have an extended Reverse legend with COL at the end instead of CL.
As your coin has the shortened Reverse legend I am inclined to say yours is - 112.

What makes matters slightly confusing is the fact that the coin pictured on Wildwinds is described incorrectly,
it says COL at the end but they put in the description CL ?

As Camerinvs explained the letters and numbers are the reference material code the previous owner used to identify it, he did put " similar " in the explanation regarding the Reverse however which may mean that he found the COL issue but not the CL.
I deny nothing but doubt everything, opinions are made to be changed, how else is the truth to be gotten at.
Thanks! I thought I needed a special word for "Name/type of the coin", like the other ones in the catalog. Many of them use words like "AS", or "follis", "denarius", "sestertius", "tetradrach", or antoninianus", and I don't know which word would be appropriate for my coin. I see that some coins were added to the catalog without such words - so I can assume I can simply name this one "AE26 Phillip II (Pisidia, Antioch)".

Thank you both for your help!
The system AE26 etc., as well as the Late Imperial system AE 1, 2, 3, 4, is used where we don't know the denomination of a coin. This is the case with many if not most provincial coins, such as yours.
