Unknown coin for identification

7 сообщений

I am submitting an unknown coin for identification. See attached pictures of obverse and reverse. From matching to pictures, I think it is an Ottoman Empire coin from the 1800s.

I have no other information about this coin. It was part of a coin collection that my mother left when she passed away. The rest of the collection was US coins that were easy to identify. This is the only coin that I have not been able to identify.
Looks to me like a brass imitation of a gold Ottoman coin.
I collect coins and tokens which circulated in Africa from 18th century to 2000. I sell about 7000 illustrated world coins from http://www.avscoins.com.

To answer the questions:

Metal? - looks yellow. I am guessing bronze, brass, copper or gold

Diameter?

diameter in inches - 9/16
diameter in CM - 1.42
(i.e. slightly smaller than a US dime)

Thickness - very thin, less than 1/32 inch or less than 1mm

Weight? - I don't have a scale, but it feels light, less than 1 gram.
Looks like one of these, which are not yet in the Numista catalogue:
Turkey 1/4 Zeri Mahbub KM# 608
Egypt 1/4 Mahbub, Rubiya KM# 190
According to my paper catalogue, diameter of both should be 14mm, weight 0.75-0.79gr for the Turkish one and 0.58gr for the Egyptian. The same source mentions different edge types for the Egyptian one, which for the 1223//8 should be 'plain border of dots'.

Is there anyone who dares to give a suggestion about its authenticity? I don't.

The obverse doesn't match those coins or their variants that I've seen for Ottoman fractions, and KM isn't the best when it comes to Ottoman altins and mahbubs.

I'm not an expert on Ottoman gold but I don't think its authentic.

Hello,
I was hoping that somebody can tell me more about the coin in pictures. I picked it from an estate sale and all I know is that both sides are identical, an old Hispan coin minted in Mexico City, 4 reales and it appears to be silver (non-magnetic). Could this be an old error coin? All input will be highly appreciated.
